Shepherd’s Heart is a four week series where the elders of Rainier Valley Church share their pastoral heart for the church family.
Shepherd’s Heart - Week #1 “The Christian Life: Stop, Look, and Listen
Pastor Nate opened his message with the question: “how do you be a good Christian?” How would you answer that question and why does it matter? Pastor Nate focused in on Jesus’ teaching in John 15 about the importance of Christians abiding in Christ. What does it mean to abide in Christ? How can we choose to either abide or not abide in Christ? What difference does Abiding in Christ make in our lives? How is the Christian Life essentially tied to abiding in Christ?
Pastor Nate encouraged us to think over three ways we can abide in Christ as we (1) stop, (2) look, and (3) listen to God.
Pastor Nate talked about how worry can keep us from abiding in Christ. How has worry impacted your assurance of God’s goodness and love? How do you combat worry without adding to your anxieties? Pastor Nate also talked about stopping the entanglements that keep us distracted. What sorts of things in your life distract you from the simply truth of abiding in Christ?
Pastor Nate encouraged us to look to those things which God has ordained to help us to Abide in Christ. How are you practicing looking to the Word for refreshment and encouragement? Pastor Nate highlighted creation as a means of God displaying his power and nature to us. How does being out in nature connect with Abiding in Christ? How do you uniquely experience God when you’re hiking, camping, swimming and enjoying these summer months?
Part of listening is the discipline of slowing down and turning off the noise in your life. How do you practice slowing down? What noises need to be turned off in your life? Pastor Nate gave a “homework” assignment for us by encouraging us to turn off our phones, go outside, walk, and pray and listen to what God has for us. What sorts of things is God bringing up in your heart and mind? How is he leading and teaching you?
