Week 6, Day 4
Appointed to Be Fruitful
By: Kyle Van Tine
John 15:16 “You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.”
None of us would have known, loved or followed Jesus had he not first loved us (Matt 11:27, Eph 2:1-10). Being Jesus’ chosen people isn’t just a ticket to heaven when we die but the life of heaven operating in us even now as we live. Each of us is called to bear fruits of repentance (Matt 3:8) and the fruits of a Spirit-filled life (Gal 5:22-23). Jesus promises us that if we’re abiding in him, repenting when we step out of alignment, and enjoying the fruits of spirit-led life, the subsequent result is that our prayer life will be kicked into overdrive. Jesus goes so far as to promise us that WHATEVER we ask of the Father in prayer, led by the Spirit and sealed with the authority of Jesus, will be given to us because we are in operating in alignment with the will and heart of our triune God.
The Apostle Peter reflecting on this incredible reality says that Christians are literally partaking in the divine nature as we abide in Christ, believing the Father’s promises and praying by the Spirit (2 Pet 1:4).
Question #1: What are some indicators that your either abiding in Christ in your prayers or simply operating in the flesh? In what ways are your prayers different when you’re abiding?
Question #2: What kinds of “fruit” have you experienced when you abide in Jesus in the everyday stuff of life?
